storing personal information is just one side of the coin

tools and processes that are hardly personalisable create a risk (a la Offloading Cognition onto Cognitive Technology 2009 and Préservation des biens communs cognitifs, June 2011)

improving the process can have more impact than improving the information stored (a la Google Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips, Science July 2011)

by business design, non-floss software, even with APIs, hinder creativity and invite to be passive about the process, thus most likely making personalization and learning difficult (see Information Rules on information, software and their economics)
